UPDATE AS OF 3 p.m. THURSDAY
Delta Police have now confirmed the identity of the person that was recovered from Ladner slough Wednesday afternoon, however, they are still in the process of trying to contact that person’s family.
"The investigation remains ongoing, however, unless new evidence comes to light, police will not be commenting further on this matter," said DPD public affairs coordinator Cris Leykauf.
Leykauf said at approximately 9:45 a.m. Wednesday morning, police were contacted by a person out walking their dog near Ladner Harbour Park who reported seeing a body in the water.
On Thursday morning, she told the Optimist there is nothing to indicate that anything is suspicious.
After the initial call Wednesday morning, officers attended the scene, making their way to the Ladner Yacht Club on River Road.
“The police came to the door looking for assistance, so I took them out in our little skiff and had a look at the scene,” said the yacht club’s resident caretaker Richard Ashley.
“It looked to be an Asian lady I’d say probably around 40,” Ashley said.
He said the body was wedged between some deadheads in the water.
“The tide was running so it kept the body nice and tight where they wanted,” said Ashley. “Once they took a look at the scene, I brought them back to the dock. It’s all I can do because it’s a crime scene.”
Ladner Harbour Park was immediately closed to traffic and public access.
With the assistance of the Delta Fire Department and the New Westminster police boat, officers were able to recover the body shortly after 1 p.m.
The Delta Police Department’s forensic identification section was also on scene to conduct an investigation.
