Let’s head back to Sunday May 31, 1970, for the second annual Delta Community Walkathon.

It was an opportunity for residents to raise pledges for their organizations, an event sponsored by the Delta Community Band.

Participants agreed to donate half their pledges to the community band and the other half to charity of their choice, thus “everybody wins”.

Cash prizes were handed out to the participant who raised the most, as well as the oldest, youngest who completed the course and the service club that raised the most.

The event started at the Kennedy Shopping Center in North Delta and finished at the Tsawwassen Shopping Center, with Delta Police providing traffic control.

Open to all ages, the event saw Ald. Hugh Hunt fire the starting gun.
