During this very difficult past year, regional parks and outdoor spaces have provided many people a lot of enjoyment and health benefits. They have given us a safe place to go and connect with nature.
This spring, the Boundary Bay Park Association has partnered with the Pacific Parkland Foundation as well as several other Metro Vancouver Park Associations to bring you an exciting opportunity to get outside and build your nature knowledge.
The “Snap & Share” project runs May 15 to June 13 throughout Metro Vancouver’s regional parks and greenways. Simply snap photos of plants and animals in your local regional park and share them on iNaturalist, a free, online social networking platform with people coming together to share biodiversity information. It allows you to connect, share, and discover the amazing diversity of Boundary Bay Regional Park with just a few clicks. As well, you will be joining a global community of citizen scientists and contributing to biodiversity data collection and inventory.
This is a fun outdoor activity for everyone, either on your own or in your own family bubble. All registered participants will be entered into weekly draws with fantastic prizes such as family memberships to Museum of Anthropology, Beaty Biodiversity Museum and Vancouver Botanical Gardens Association just to name a few.
The individual with the most observations will win a $120 gift certificate for Capilano Suspension Bridge Park, plus a $60 gift card from Book Warehouse.
Please take photos safely, stay on trails and don't approach wildlife.
If you are new to iNaturalist, please join the free webinar on Tuesday, May 11 hosted by John Reynolds, SFU professor and iNaturalist expert.
Reynolds will teach you the basics of using the iNaturalist website and mobile app as well as answer any questions you may have.
