The City of Delta is planning road and cycling improvements on 3 Avenue, from Boundary Bay Road to Centennial Parkway.
Currently gathering feedback, the city has put forward a concept that includes protected cycling lanes, new sidewalks, parking pockets along 3 Avenue east of 65B Street, grassed boulevards with street trees, new decorative LED street lighting, crosswalk upgrades with pedestrian activated flashing beacons and other improvements.
Construction for the Neighbourhood Road Improvement Project has been tentatively scheduled for 2025, subject to council approval.
The project would also meet some of the goals within Delta’s new Cycling Master Plan.
The city must still come up with final detailed designs.
According to the city, the project would improve access around the community for vehicles, cyclists and pedestrians and help make streets and communities greener and more livable with improved street aesthetics, as well as improve safety.
The city also notes that some driveway access would be temporarily impacted during placement of the new concrete curb and sidewalk. All residents would be informed of the placement schedule well in advance to minimize inconvenience.
An area resident has already conveyed concerns about the proposal, noting a series of issues including the city taking an easement on either side of the road, that would be an encroachment bringing noise closer to front doors, the loss of parking and other concerns. The resident asked for more options to be presented by the city.
The city is holding a public information meeting on June 7 at the Winskill Park fieldhouse, from 5 to 7 p.m.
