The Delta School District managed to get about 34 per cent of its requested funding from the Ministry of Education and Childcare for capital projects for schools.
That's according to a staff report to the school board, noting three projects will receive funding under the School Enhancement Program, Carbon Neutral Capital Program funding streams, as well as the Playground Equipment Program
The school board each year submits its list of proposed projects. Among other projects, the district last year requested funding for various upgrades including elevator installations and Sunshine Hills and Heath Elementary schools, a roof refurbishment at Delta Secondary, high voltage transformers for three schools as well as upgrades to the classroom air distribution supply systems at Gray, Hawthorne, Hellings and Jarvis Elementaries.
The district's wish list, submitted last year, totalled just over $5 million.
The provincial government last month announced the Delta district will receive around $1.7 million for just three projects.
The funding the district was approved for will be directed to interior construction upgrades at Heath Traditional and Sunshine Hills Elementary schools ($1,195,000), as well as electrical upgrades at Port Guichon Elementary for a high voltage transformer ($350,000).
The district will also receive $195,000 for a new accessible playground at Heath. The district also applied for funding for accessible playground equipment at Gibson Elementary but was not successful in getting money for that project.
The ministry notes that as part of Budget 2024, the province is providing $291.9 million for school maintenance projects in B.C.
