The purpose of the Crime Beat is to educate and inform the public about some of the property crime trends occurring in North Delta and other files of interest. The following are some of the calls Delta police responded to in the previous week:
*March 8, 12:35 a.m., 1000 block Highway 91: Police were conducting proactive traffic enforcement when a vehicle was observed driving at a high rate of speed going northbound. Police confirmed the vehicle was travelling at a speed of 140km/h in a 70km/h zone. Police conducted a traffic stop and issued the driver an excessive speeding ticket as well as having the car impounded.
*March 9, 12:37 a.m., 10000 block Delsom Crescent: Complainant reported that he had purchased a gaming console off an online selling market the previous day which was never delivered to him. The male sent the money that night and the item was never delivered. Police advised the male to contact his bank and the online selling market to report the fraud. Police educated the male on protecting themselves from scammers and police confirmed that no personal or banking information of the males was divulged during the incident.
*March 9, 11:31 a.m., 10000 block Hermosa Drive: Complainant reported that they had received a call from a male advising them their credit card had been compromised. The male requested that they buy gift cards and give him the numbers on the cards. The complainant purchased $3,000 worth of cards before she suspected the scam. She cancelled all bank cards in an abundance of caution. Police advised her not to purchase gift cards for others over the phone and to verify with her bank if she gets similar calls in the future.
*March 9, 12:01 p.m., 8000 block 118th Street: Complainant reported seeing a replica firearm behind an electrical box. Police attended and located a children’s cap gun, which was then seized for destruction.
*March 11, 2:43 p.m., 76000 block Highway 17: While doing proactive patrols, police came across a broken down vehicle with visible extensive damage to the front axle. The vehicle was unoccupied and had no insurance. The vehicle was towed to be kept for safe keeping for the registered owner and attempts to call the register owner were unsuccessful. The vehicle was locked and there were no signs of forced entry or damage to the ignition. Police were able to speak with the wife of the registered owner and advised her of the location of the vehicle.
*March 12, 9 a.m., Highway 99 King George Blvd: While conducting proactive patrols and through a search in the computer, police found that a driver’s license connected to a vehicle had been cancelled since July 4, 2020. Police stopped the vehicle and the driver was unable to provide a driver’s license. The driver was issued a violation ticket for not having a valid driver’s license and it was also discovered roadside that the vehicle had not been insured since March 11. The driver was also issued a violation ticket for no insurance, and the vehicle was towed.
*March 12, 6:06 p.m., 8900 block 132nd Street: Complainant reported a possible impaired motorist that was tailgating and had pulled in front of the complainant and had begun brake checking him. Police were able to catch up and initiate a traffic stop. Police noticed a distinct odour of liqour present along with the driver having red droopy eyes. The driver also admitted to consuming alcohol one hour prior to driving. Police observed empty cans of alcohol in the back seat and an Approved Screening Device demand was read. The driver provided two samples, both resulting in a “warn.” Police issued the driver a seven-day immediate roadside prohibition and the vehicle was impounded.
*March 13, 4:20 a.m., Nordel 112th Street: Police observed a vehicle pulled off to the side of the road with a flat tire and stopped to offer assistance. Police used their brute strength to jack up the vehicle and remove the stiff lug nuts but were faced with a devastating discovery when they learned that the last nut was stripped from previous usage. Police tried every trick in the book to unscrew the final nut. Another member also attended to work their magic, however the lock nut remained stubborn and would not budge. A tow truck attended, however the lock nut was still unresponsive to their power drill. Both the vehicle and driver were then transported to his residence.
*March 13, 11 p.m., 10000 block Highway 99: Police stopped a vehicle for excessive speed after he was captured on radar going 153 km/h in a posted 100 km/h zone. The driver was issued an excessive speeding ticket as well as a seven-day vehicle impoundment.
