The purpose of the Crime Beat is to educate and inform the public about some of the property crime trends occurring in North Delta and other files of interest. *Aug. 10, 11:36 p.m., 7200 block 120th St: Police observed a vehicle speeding out of Delta and initiated a traffic stop. Police noted a strong odour of cannabis coming from inside the vehicle, and the driver admitted to being in possession of illicit cannabis and, while exiting the vehicle, reached for a knife in his pocket that he stated he kept on him for “protection.” The driver was arrested on both offences but later released with no charges after surrendering both the knife and illicit cannabis for destruction.
*Aug. 11, 12:56 a.m., location withheld: Complainant reported that she and her roommates were woken up by noises inside their house. The complainant was adamant that they heard something running inside the house and then saw a shadow moving in the backyard. Police cleared the residence and property, confirmed all windows and doors were locked, nothing was missing, and there were no signs of forced entry, and determined the noises were likely from an animal. A safety plan was put in place and the complainants were recommended to follow up with the landlord about pest control.
*Aug. 11, 11:40 p.m., 7500 block Garfield Drive: Complainant called police to report four males smoking marijuana in a nearby park. Upon police arrival, none of the males were smoking. Police informed the males of both the no smoking in parks and dusk to dawn park closure bylaws, as well as the risks associated with smoking during a fire ban. One of the males advised that he was the designated driver, and showed no sign of impairment. The males were cooperative, showed sound decision making with utilizing a designated driver, and left the area. No violation ticket was issued.
*Aug. 12, 9200 block 116A St: Complainant called police to report on overnight theft from auto to their locked vehicle parked outside on their driveway. Vehicle rummaged through and GPS stolen. Multiple items seized for forensic evaluation.
*Aug. 12, 9200 block 117 St: Complainant called police to report an overnight mischief after discovering the passenger window of their parked vehicle was smashed, but nothing was taken, despite expensive tools left in the vehicle.
*Aug. 13, 8:56 a.m., 8000 block Highway 1 connector: Police observed a vehicle approaching from the rear at a high rate of speed on the Alex Fraser Bridge, passing the police cruiser. Police caught up to the vehicle and initiated a traffic stop in which the driver was issued a violation ticket for excessive speed and had their vehicle impounded.
*Aug. 13, 6:42 p.m., 12200 block 97A Ave: Police conducted a traffic stop and noticed a collapsible baton concealed in the glove box while the driver retrieved insurance papers. The baton was seized, and the driver was arrested for possessing a weapon for a dangerous purpose in addition to being given a violation ticket for the initial traffic stop offences.
*Aug. 15, 12:52 a.m., Highway 91/64th Ave. off-ramp: Police observed a vehicle speeding southbound on Highway 91 from 72nd Avenue. A traffic stop was conducted, and the driver admitted to drinking. An Approved Screening Device demand was read, and the driver provided two breath samples, resulting in a “FAIL”. The driver was issued a 90-day immediate roadside prohibition and had their vehicle towed for 30 days.
