The new owner is looking to redevelop the property.

A public information meeting will be held later this month on a contentious application to redevelop the former home of a Boundary Bay squash club.

Set for Tuesday, Jan. 19, the meeting will be an opportunity to hear about the plan to subdivide the waterfront property at 6788 Corbould Rd. to construct two single-family homes. The application requires several approvals, including an Official Community Plan amendment as well as rezoning from its current private recreation designation.

It's the second attempt by the owner to redevelop the site as an identical application last year was rejected by Delta council.

The current building on the property had been the longtime home of the Bayside Squash Club. The property has been sold a couple of times in recent years and is now owned by a numbered company represented by Yan Ling Wu.

The club's members lobbied against the previous rezoning bid, but their victory was short-lived when they were informed the owner was shutting the doors, leaving the club without a home. The owner applied for a demolition permit last August. Delta's planning department notes the application is at a preliminary stage and has not gone to council for consideration, therefore, aspects of the proposal might change as the application proceeds through the review process. It would also have to go to a public hearing.

According to the planning department, the building is in poor condition and would require significant upgrades to meet municipal standards. The squash club admits the building needs repairs, however, the executive insists it has an active group of members that would work hard at keeping it running.

The Jan. 19 public information meeting will be held in the library of South Park Elementary, 735 Gilchrist Dr., Tsawwassen, from 7 to 8:30 p.m.
