Delta Skating Club is proud to have been offering quality skating programs in the community of Delta for 65 years.
It all started March 17, 1959, with a pivotal meeting at the Courtroom for the District of Delta, where the club’s inception was formalized.
Originating at the city’s first-ever indoor ice rink at a converted Boundary Bay Airport Hanger, the Delta Skating Club was formed.
By December of 1959, the club was in full swing, hosting its first Pop Concert, followed by a carnival on March 17, 1961. Throughout its history, the club has organized numerous ice shows for the community, with the most recent production, Fairytales on Ice, held this past December.
Among the club’s founding coaches was Jennifer Nicks, who alongside her brother placed fourth at the 1952 Winter Olympic Games in Oslo, Norway, and then won the 1953 World Pairs title for Great Britain.
Nicks’ untimely passing in 1980 at the age of 48 was a loss deeply felt by the skating community. Her legacy is commemorated through the annual presentation of a memorial trophy in her honour.
As a non-profit organization sanctioned by Skate Canada, Delta Skating Club remains dedicated to offering a comprehensive array of programs year-round. From CanSkate, the nation-wide learn to skate program, to recreational and competitive figure skating, synchronized skating, and power skating for hockey and ringette players.
Delta Skating Club fosters a culture of talent development and passion across a diverse array of disciplines. The club’s STARskate program provides further in-depth figure skating, with opportunities for Skate Canada assessments and competitions. Delta Skating Club also has a successful synchronized skating program with teams winning multiple medals at Provincial competitions this past year.
