Burnaby has been named one of Canada and B.C.'s rattiest cities.

Two Tri-City communities are in the top 25 provincially and nationally for Orkin Canada's latest "rattiest" city list.

Coquitlam is ranked ninth among B.C. municipalities, 16th in all of Canada, according to the company's latest report.

Port Coquitlam, meanwhile, was 13th in B.C. and 22nd nation-wide.

Orkin explained the data is based on the number of rat and mice treatments crew members performed from Aug. 1, 2023, to July 31, 2024, including residential and commercial visits.

The new ranking is also one spot higher for Coquitlam than the 10th spot the city earned from Orkin's 2023 rat report.

This year is PoCo's first appearance on the list since 2022 when Orkin ranked the community ninth on its annual list.

The 2024 provincial ranking was as follows:

  1. Vancouver
  2. Kelowna
  3. Burnaby
  4. Victoria
  5. Richmond
  6. Surrey
  7. Vernon

Orkin Canada recommends says people should take the following steps to keep rodents from targeting their property:

  • Eliminate Harbourage: Remove clutter indoors and outdoors, trim overgrown vegetation and keep grass short
  • Cut Off Water Sources: Eliminate moisture by clearing clogged gutters and fixing leaky pipes or faucets both indoors and outdoors
  • Remove Food Sources: Clean up fallen fruits or vegetables in the yard, store garbage in rodent-proof bins and prevent overflow
  • Seal Entry Points: Close gaps larger than 1/4 inch with rodent-proof materials and install weather strips on exterior doors to block entry points
