It's felt like nothing could stop the Vancouver Canucks on their road trip through the Eastern Conference, as they've won five-straight games, including tough tests against the New York Rangers and New York Islanders.
But it turns out something can stop the Canucks: snow.
The Canucks were hoping to fly out of Buffalo Niagara International Airport on Saturday afternoon after their 1-0 win over the Buffalo Sabres but heavy snowfall caused the cancellation of all inbound and outbound flights.
That includes private flights like that of the Canucks' AC 7038 with Air Canada, as first reported by CanucksArmy's David Quadrelli. A team spokesperson confirmed that the Canucks will have to stay in Buffalo overnight and that this was not the plan. They're hopeful they'll be able to get out of Buffalo on Sunday.
If the Canucks still can't fly out on Sunday, that could be an issue, as they are scheduled to play in Columbus, Ohio against the Blue Jackets on Monday, January 15, at 1 p.m. local time, 10 a.m. PST. That game will already be a challenge as the final game of a seven-game road trip but travel complications could make it more difficult for the Canucks to extend their win streak to six games.
The snowfall in Buffalo has affected other sports as well, with the Buffalo Bills postponing their playoff game against the Pittsburgh Steelers, with forecasters warning of a blizzard from what's called "lake-effect snow." Parts of Buffalo are expected to see upwards of 40 cm of snow, along with heavy winds.
