Let’s go back to 1952 and visit Ladner’s Chung family.
The above Delta Archives photo was taken inside the Chung's cafe on Westham Street (48th Ave). The people in the photo are (left to right) Mary, Frances, Joyce, Vickie, Winch, Nap and Chung Chuck.
One of the most colouful characters in Delta’s history, the controversial potato grower bought land at the west end of Westham Street, the site of Ladner's old Chinatown, and farmed there until the mid-1980s. He built his first home on 47A Street, which became the famous "Chung Chuck Potato Grower" building.
He married Victoria in 1940 and they had five children.
In the mid-1940s he purchased the Maeda home on Westham Street, which became the family's home and restaurant business. More than willing to fight for his rights, he continued to work well into old age. He died in 1986.
Family members a few years ago operated a new Chung's Fish and Chips on Delta Street in Ladner Village with Cheryl Chung as its executive chef and operator. The restaurant was damaged by fire in 2015 and did not reopen.
