April 24 to 30 is volunteer week in Canada, a time to celebrate Canada's millions of volunteers and recognize the many ways in which they give back.
As a nonprofit charity, Earthwise Society wouldn't be able to run its education and community programs and maintain its beautiful demonstration garden without the support of an amazing team of dedicated volunteers.
As the weather warms up, the Earthwise Garden in Boundary Bay is slowly starting to return to life. Volunteers have been hard at work tidying, trimming, pruning and planting, and the spring flowers are bright, fresh, and ready to welcome visitors. But there is still plenty to be done, and the Earthwise volunteer team is always ready to welcome new helping hands.
Would you like to learn more about Earthwise Society and discover what you can do to contribute towards a healthier and more sustainable community? Or perhaps you don’t have a garden space of your own and have been missing the feeling of soil between your fingers. Whatever your motivation, Earthwise would like to meet you.
On Monday, April 25 at 7 p.m., Earthwise will be welcoming new volunteers as they kick off the spring growing season with a Zoom volunteer orientation session.
This one-hour session will discuss the benefits of volunteering at Earthwise and explore the different types of opportunities that are available. New recruits will have the chance to meet the Earthwise team, ask questions, and figure out which roles would best suit them.
Volunteering at Earthwise is not just for those who are passionate about gardening and farming. The organization’s programs focus on a wide range of sustainability issues, including food security, environmental education, and therapeutic horticulture, so no matter what your interest or skill there is sure to be an opportunity for you.
To thank their hardworking volunteers, and help welcome new ones, Earthwise will also be hosting a volunteer celebration open house in the Earthwise Garden on Thursday, April 28 from 10 a.m. to noon. New volunteers who attend the Zoom session are invited to the garden to meet seasoned volunteers, tour the garden, and see firsthand what the Earthwise volunteers do. The session will wrap up with some refreshments under the gazebo.
The info session and open house are great for anyone who would like to get in touch with nature and meet others while giving back to the community. To register for either or both of these events, email: [email protected].
