The upcoming 2021 Ladner Christmas Bird Count is this Sunday, Dec. 19.
The results from this annual tradition monitor wild bird populations that can be used to help determine the health of our environment. If you live inside the Ladner Count Circle (click here to view the circle boundary), we want to know what types of birds your feeders attract, and how many. You can spend as little or as much time as you want watching your feeders on Dec. 19.
Please record the following:
- Location of your feeders (approximate is fine, e.g., street name)
- The time spent watching your feeders
- The species and number of birds (do your best not to double count birds because some species will visit your feeders multiple times (e.g, Anna's Hummingbird, Black-capped Chickadee, Northern Flicker)
- Send in an email to Yousif Attia at [email protected] or by phone Toll Free 1-888-448-2473 (ext. 198).
A handy resource to help identify birds in your yard can be found here: https://www.birdscanada.org/apps/checklist/index.jsp or download the Merlin Bird ID app on your smart phone.
If you're unsure of a bird, you can try to take a photo or recording with your phone and send it with your list. Happy bird counting!
