What’s better than homemade pie? Free homemade pie, of course!

For the fourth year, two seniors communities in Tsawwassen are hosting a drive-thru pie giveaway to celebrate National Seniors Day.

The idea was born amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

“As the fall of 2020 set in and seniors were confined indoors and often isolated, we wanted to host an event that would cheer them up and let them know we see them and we care about them,” says Bria Communities marketing manager Janice Miller.

National Seniors Day was established on Oct. 1, 2010, as a way to honour and celebrate the presence and contribution of seniors to Canadian families, communities and society as a whole. It is celebrated simultaneously with the UN’s International Day of Older Persons, a day intent on highlighting the contributions of old adults and understanding the challenges they face.

The pie drive-thru has a simple concept - celebrate seniors with pie.

The pies are made in-house by the culinary staff at each residence.

“It’s a big undertaking,” added Miller. “Our teams always make homemade pie for our residents, but it’s a big leap from making pie for 150 people to making 150 pies.”

This year, The Waterford’s executive chef Matthew Baryluk has perfected the Honey-Spiced Pear Crumble. The pie features honey from The Waterford’s hives harvested in-house by residents with the help of Master Beekeeper Julia Common.

At The Wexford, executive chef Sean McCarthy has gone the classic route with a juicy cherry pie. There’s no pie filling here, it’s loaded with dark, sweet cherries with a hint of lemon.

The drive-thru events occur on-site at each residence on Tuesday, Oct. 3. Seniors drive through, roll down their windows and get their free pie.

At The Waterford, located at 1345 56 St in Tsawwassen, the event runs from 10 to 11 a.m. There will be 75 pies available, and seniors coming to pick up pies are encouraged drive-thru via the Windsor Woods driveway off 56 St.

The drive-thru will open at The Wexford, 1737 56 St, from 2 to 3 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 3. Chef Sean and his team are baking 75 pies for the event.

Seniors are encouraged to choose just one event to participate in to ensure there is enough pie for everyone. One pie per household. Please, no early birds, as traffic congestion is an issue.
