Kids in Delta and throughout Metro Vancouver are waiting a long time for a Big Brother to help them figure out life.

Currently, more than 100 kids in the region are waiting to be matched with a Big Brother in the community mentoring program.

But it’s not easy finding volunteers willing to commit to a year as a Big Brother, so the non-profit has launched a new campaign, 30 Men in 30 Days.

Big Brothers of Greater Vancouver helps kids reach their full potential though impactful mentoring relationships in collaboration with local communities. It offers six different free youth mentorship programs for children and volunteers of all backgrounds.

“This month, we are aiming to recruit a community program mentor per day,” Norman Galimski, marketing, communications and recruitment officer, said.

The demand is especially high in neighbouring Surrey where 100 families cannot even get on to the waiting list for a Big Brother because of the shortage of volunteers.

Rose Higgins, director of programs and operations for Big Brothers, said many kids in that city have been waiting for two years because of the challenges of finding volunteers who can commit to the one-year program.

“We know there are community members out there who willing and able to volunteer, but we simply need to reach them. Our goal is to find those individuals and jumpstart our Big Brothers Community Mentoring Program and reopen our Surrey family intake,” Galimski said.
