What’s happening at the George Mackie Library?

There are lots of fun, free programs this July at the George Mackie Library in North Delta.

Introduce kids to the love of books and language.

Early literacy programs such as Babytime and a variety of Storytimes continue through July and August.

Make some special summer papercrafts at Summer Crafts for Kids on Thursday, July 18, from 2 to 3:30 p.m. Activities vary and are suitable for ages five to 12. Children under 10 must be accompanied by an adult. Parents are encouraged to stay and participate with their child(ren).

Glowing eyes, moonlit millipedes, and echoes through the forest - what is nature up to after dark? On Friday, July 19, from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. join a Park Interpreter from Metro Vancouver Regional Parks for Mysterious Creatures of the Night. See real specimens and enjoy games/activities. While all ages are welcome, this program is recommended for ages four to nine. 

Calling all aspiring authors ages 10 to 13. Step into the world of storytelling with Tweens: Creative Writing with ChatGPT. On Monday, July 22, from 2 to 2:45 p.m. learn how to use generative AI to craft captivating short stories, explore imaginative worlds, and bring your characters to life. Unleash your storytelling potential through creative writing activities, story games, and writing challenges. Registration is required.

Explore the world of parrots at Parrots in the Library. Lorraine Livesey from Grey Haven Exotic Bird Sanctuary, along with Sherlock, a Blue and Gold Macaw and Huey, a Quaker Parrot, will be at the library on Wednesday, July 24, from 11 a.m. to noon. Discover if all parrots talk, if they make good pets, and why some birds fly and other birds can’t.

Looking for a place to meet other caregivers and socialize with your baby? Join the fun at Baby Social on Thursday, July 25, from 11 to 11:30 a.m. Babies and their caregivers can play, socialize, and practice early literacy skills in a safe environment. This program is best suited to children up to two-years-old. This program occurs again on Thursday, Aug. 22.

Join the Summer Dance Party on Thursday, July 25, from 2 to 3 p.m. for various dances, such as Freeze, Follow the Leader and Animal Dance, as well as fun games and activities such Simon Says and more. Snack included. For ages five to 12.

Looking for an opportunity to get out of the house, bond over games while making new friends, and win some prizes? The Teen Advisory Group (TAG) coordinates with the library to present Teen Games Night on Thursday, July 25, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Bring your friends, siblings, cousins, anyone between the ages of 13 to 19 and come out to spend a night of fun with other local teens.

Earth Wise Society partners with the library on Saturday, July 27, from 11 a.m. to noon to look at what organic gardening mean. At Organic Gardening at Home, concepts such as soil health, environmental impacts, health benefits, garden design, crop selection, and starting seeds at home, will be discussed. Bring your questions.

Pack up your needles and yarn and head to the library for Knit ‘N Stitch on Fridays until from 2 to 4 p.m. Knitting, crocheting, quilting and weaving are fun ways to connect across the generations. Join members of all ages and abilities to share ideas, techniques and good conversation.

Seniors are invited to drop by for a cup of tea and conversation every Saturday in July, from 11 a.m. to noon. At Senior Saturdays, we will host book talks, tech talks and brain teasers.
