Five thousand - that’s how many promises God has given each of us in scripture, but He won’t force us to live in the promises. You have to go get them.
Like Joshua, who had to step out to take hold of what God had promised, we have to do the same. Here are four principles to getting the promises God has made:
Learn from your past, but don’t live in it. Joshua had to lead and he had to let go of Moses as the leader. In Joshua 1:1-2, Moses had died. The miracles Moses had performed for the Israelite people existed now in the past. God would use a new man to secure their victories moving forward.
Take hold of your spiritual inheritance. Joshua had to take steps of faith to receive the promises, but God gave a condition. He had to place the sole of his foot where he may normally be afraid to do so. Waiting for God to simply poor His promises on you is not how God operates. You have to go get it!
Adjust your focus. Joshua 1:5, “Just as I have been with Moses, I will be with you; I will not fail you or forsake you.” Joshua faced storms and difficulties as he sought to conquer the land. But God assured him of his victory. If he focused on the problems, he would have cowered in fear. When we direct our focus to God and the promises in His word, then we can reduce the fear and doubt in our own life.
Be attached to the word. This is foundational to Joshua’s victories and life. Joshua 1:7, “Only be strong and very courageous; be careful to do according to all the law which Moses My servant commanded you; do not turn from it to the right or to the left, so that you may have success wherever you go.” God’s word gives us wisdom about everything. As you move forward in life, apply the truth of the bible and you will gain insight into how to accomplish all God has planned for you.
