Valentines has long been a fun part of school life in Delta, but, like a lot of other activities, it will be different this year due to coronavirus.
Parents are receiving messages from their children’s principals that the custom of bringing gifts and treats with Valentine notes to classmates can’t occur this year due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.
Students will only be permitted to exchange paper Valentines.
“Unfortunately, our district safety plan does not permit any gifts or treats to be exchanged at school. Please do not send candy, chocolates, cookies, cupcakes, pencils, erasers or any other valentine gifts to school this year. Students may wish to take some time to create original, artistic, paper Valentines by hand or by digital means that would be very welcome,” one elementary principal wrote.
Meanwhile, eight Delta schools are on Fraser Health’s current COVID-19 exposure list.
According to the health region’s list updated online on Monday (Jan. 25), Sands Secondary in North Delta had an exposure event Jan. 18, while Ladner's Hawthorne Elementary had an exposure to the virus Jan. 15.
The other schools include North Delta's Burnsview Secondary (Jan. 12, 13, 14), North Delta's Chalmers Elementary (Jan. 11, 12, 13, 14), Ladner's Delta Secondary (Jan. 11, 12, 13), North Delta's Delview Secondary (Jan. 12, 13, 14, 15), North Delta's Gibson Elementary (Jan. 15) and Tsawwassen's Southpointe Academy (Jan. 12, 13, 14).
