Delta council gave preliminary approval last week to an application by B.C.

Housing to open an 18-bed licensed care facility for seniors with mental health issues.

The facility, at 11030 River Rd., is to replace the Delta Lodge, an aging seniors care home at 4501 Arthur Dr. in Ladner.

Fraser Health identified the replacement of the Ladner facility as a high priority.

Surrounded by a residential area, the River Road building was formerly occupied by a seniors group home operated by the Abbeyfield Annieville Society. That group home closed down last year.

B.C. Housing purchased the property and will own it on behalf of Fraser Health.

A staff report notes the North Delta facility meets or exceeds the licensing requirements for a care facility.

The property needs rezoning to change its designation to a mental health facility.

The application will be presented at an upcoming public hearing.
