The field lights for the existing synthetic turf soccer field at Mackie Park are metal halides but they are to be replaced with LED lights as part of the project.

The City of Delta has issued a request for proposals for the design and development of a new synthetic turf field for a full-size soccer pitch overlaid with markings for football at Mackie Park.

The synthetic turf field will have perimeter fencing, LED field lighting, below-grade drainage, goals, field equipment, perimeter access pathways, as well as a provision for a future scoreboard and other related field amenities.

The existing amenities at the 82nd Avenue Park in North Delta include a baseball field, a synthetic turf soccer field, a gravel field that is to be converted into another synthetic turf field, as well as off-leash areas, washrooms, a parking lot and trails.

The city and Delta School District are currently finalizing a land agreement that will enable the city to expand the footprint of the existing gravel field to make it large enough to accommodate a full-size soccer pitch overlaid with the markings for football that would be played under American rules.

The detailed design is be completed by Oct. 31, 2023 and construction to begin next year.

The city recently established a special reserve fund, called the Growing Communities Reserve Fund, where a one-time provincial grant of just over $16 million to Delta will go before its directed to local infrastructure projects.

The city will first use that funding for the second artificial turf field at Mackie Park and also a new track at Delta Secondary in Ladner.

The preliminary design phase has already been completed for the new track at DSS.

Meanwhile, council recently approved a contract valued at close to $2 million to construct a new fieldhouse at the North Delta Track, a structure which will use shipping containers as its primary building elements.

The new track at North Delta Secondary was funded collaboratively by the Delta School District, the City of Delta and provincial and federal governments.
