Another safety feature for Tsawwassen corridor

The new traffic feature was a component of a housing development at the still vacant corner vacant lot

Drivers heading into or out of Tsawwassen likely noticed a new traffic light along 56th Street.

A full traffic signal was installed at the intersection at 14B Street, a result of Delta council’s approval of an application to build a 48-unit market rental apartment building fronting the intersection.

Located at 1467-56 St., the five-storey project will be located at the southwest corner.

The project included the owner providing a voluntary $100,000 contribution for a crosswalk with a traffic signal. It represents approximately one-third of the capital cost with the city picking up the rest.

The city had previously identified the need for a crosswalk with a pedestrian-activated signal at the intersection of 56 Street and 14B Avenue. When the development project was approved over a year ago, council agreed that rather than a pedestrian-activated light, a fixed traffic signal would be a safer alternative.

Work has yet to begin on the housing project.

Meantime, as part of a recently approved condo project at Hunter Road, a full traffic signal is to be installed at Ferguson and Hunter roads.

Down the street, safety upgrades will take place at the intersection of 56th Street and 6th Avenue.

The city recently issued a request for proposal for the construction for upgrades that will include the addition of a new pedestrian light pole, addition of pedestrian heads to an existing pole, new push buttons as well as a new concrete barrier curb, sidewalk and letdown.

It remains to be seen what further safety enhancements will come for the corridor now that council has approved a new Vision Zero traffic safety strategy for Delta.
