Apartment fire claims life

Early morning blaze in Tsawwassen last Friday damages 13 suites in 16th Ave. building

The cause of last Friday's fatal apartment fire in Tsawwassen is still under investigation.

Delta police spokesperson Sgt. Cal Traversy said Tuesday the investigation into the cause of the blaze continues as some of the affected residents are being allowed to return home.

Delta fire crews were called to the Tsawwassen Terrace apartment building in the 5500-block of 16th Avenue just before 2 a.m. last Friday.

A fire was in progress in the upper level of the two-storey building. Deputy chief Ken Sim said when fire crews arrived one unit was fully involved. There were explosions on either side of that unit, he said, but crews managed to contain the fire to just three suites. One person was found dead in one of the apartments.

In all, 13 suites were damaged by either the fire or smoke and water.

About 60 residents of the 39unit building were evacuated.

Some residents have been allowed to return home, Traversy said, as the building was deemed to not have suffered any significant structural damage.

Deputy fire chief Michel Latendresse said fire investigators are working with Delta police and the B.C. Coroners Service on the investigation.

Century Group, which owns the building, issued a statement Friday afternoon: "Century Group expresses its condolences to the family of the fatality... Century Group also wishes to express its profound thanks to all Delta emergency personnel and other Delta officials who have been instrumental in a rapid, professional response to the call, and for continuing to assist the evacuees."

The name of the victim has not been released.
