A week after learning the fate of the Tour de Delta, organizers of B.C. Superweek have put the entire professional cycling series on hiatus until 2023.
“The events that make up BC Superweek require significant planning and resources, and as communities continue to navigate the impacts of the pandemic, there is still a great deal of uncertainty in regards to event sponsorship and international travel for race participants. These hurdles make it difficult for race organizers to make the essential preparations to host a BC Superweek series this July,” stated a press release issued on Tuesday morning.
B.C. Superweek consisted of several events around Metro Vancouver including Tour De Delta, New West Grand Prix, Global Relay Gastown Grand Prix, Giro di Burnaby, PoCo Grand Prix and Tour de White Rock.
Citing financial issues and many logistical challenges, Delta council voted unanimously at its March 7 meeting in to cancel the 2022 Tour de Delta. The last time Tour de Delta took place in 2019, it cost the city $300,000.
Delta was the biggest of all the Superweek stops with three competitive events over as many days. It featured criteriums in North Delta and Ladner, along with a road race in Tsawwassen.
The City of Burnaby has indicated that it will host the Giro di Burnaby in some form this summer as an independent event.
