Bright Nights brightens up dark Stanley Park forest at Christmas

Fundraiser for Burn Fund to help people recover from fire injuries. And Bright Nights 50/50 tickets offer a chance at some cash

Delta firefighters are already getting ready for Christmas.

Members of the Delta Firefighters Charitable Society and the IAFF Local 1763 were in Vancouver recently getting ready for Bright Nights in Stanley Park.

The event has been ongoing since 1997 and provides a yuletide welcome to anyone in Stanley Park between Nov. 29 and Jan. 4. The display will be open to the public daily from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m., but closed on Christmas Day,

“This wonderful event features dazzling light displays and a warm welcome from firefighter volunteers every night. Admission to Bright Nights is by donation and supports the BC Professional Fire Fighters Burn Fund,” the firefighters say on Facebook.

Visitors will be treated to a variety of light displays, (about three million lights in all) including the iconic fire truck, a giant red reindeer, and the enchanting tunnel of lights in the plaza, are all part of Bright Nights in Stanley Park.

“You’ll be greeted by friendly firefighters, enjoy plenty of candy canes, and even have the chance to take holiday photos in Santa’s workshop, located in the transformed barn,” firefighters say.

According to the B.C. Professional Fire Fighters Burn Fund, Bright Nights is the largest fundraiser of the year, supporting survivor programs and services.

That’s possible because off-duty firefighters from around the province help set up the display and take turns staffing the event every night.

The event is a partnership between the Vancouver park board and the burn fund, with the park board donating $2.5 million to the burn fund, since 1998. Part of the proceeds from the Stanley Park Bright Nights Train are also donated.

Tickets for the train however are already sold out.

If it’s not possible to get to Stanley Park on one of those nights, it’s still possible to help out and maybe win some Christmas cash in the process by buying a Bright Nights 50/50 ticket.

Last year’s jackpot reached $422,710, with the winner taking home half that amount.

Bright Nights 50/50 tickets can be purchased online.
