Grewal is alleged to have been the driver of a 2007 Honda Civic when it struck a parked car and then a power pole while travelling south on Rockwell Road.

All the vehicle occupants were airlifted to Royal Columbian Hospital, where Helgason died the following day.

Both Grewal and French, who was also a passenger, sustained serious injuries.

Helgason wanted to be a police officer, his mother, Yvonne Van De Perre, said.

"Society was a better place with him in it," she said. "He was an amazing genuine person, a beautiful hearted and loving son.

"He would have became a wonderful constable, such a reasonable and sensible young man."

On the day of the crash Helgason and a group of friends were travelling to Harrison Hot Springs.

He didn't know the driver, Van De Perre said.
