City council has approved the crossing guard program for 2023/24.

The City of Delta has agreed to continue funding its adult school crossing guard program for 2023/24 by providing a $118,800 grant to the Delta school district.

Council gave its approval Monday (July 24) after the school district completed its annual review of the program.

Last year, Delta gave $114,960 for the adult school crossing guard program that paid to have 28 crossing guards at 19 locations, or schools, for a half-hour each morning and afternoon.

This year, another location has been added near Gibson Elementary in North Delta, raising the number of guards to 29.

The new location also is heavily used by Delview Secondary students, says a staff report.

The transportation technical committee made the recommendation after discussions with the school district and local police.

Most of the crossing guards are on site from 8:30 to 9 a.m. and from 3 to 3:30 p.m.
