The City of Delta has a new policy that could pave the way for more street performers entertaining locals and visitors.
Council recently approved a new set of policies and procedures for the use of public facilities including a street performer policy.
“This policy was developed to recognize the significance of arts and culture, including performing arts, in the makeup of a healthy community.
Currently, the city has no provisions nor guidelines available to street performers who wish to occupy city space when offering their talents to the public.
This policy provides street performers (or buskers) an opportunity to legally perform on city property while following specific conditions and guidelines, including having a current Police Information Check,” a staff report notes.
Several locations have been identified in each of the city’s three communities and will be reviewed throughout the year to determine if any adjustments are needed, the report adds.
An application process has been established that requires all street performers to apply for a street performer permit and performers cannot start their acts unless a permit was issued.
Coun. Dylan Kruger said he’s excited to see a policy and procedures for street performers in Delta, an activity the city should be encouraging.
There needs to be more opportunities to highlight good local talent in places like Ladner Village, the North Delta Social Heart and at Southlands, especially in summer when arts and culture can be highlighted while supporting local businesses, he added.
