Discover the history of your own community by joining Carol Ballard of the Delta Museum and Archives at the Tsawwassen Library for Early Delta History. On Thursday, Oct. 18, 7 to 8:30 p.m., Carol will give an overview of the Delta area history from glaciations until the early 1900s. Learn about the Fraser River, what it provided and how it affected the community of Delta's ongoing history.

South Delta Newcomers & Alumni meetings are held the third Thursday of each month @ 7:15 p.m. at the Art Gallery, Kiwanis Longhouse - 1710-56th Street, Tsawwassen. The club is for all women who have moved to Ladner, Tsawwassen or Point Roberts to introduce you to the community and help you make new friends.

On Oct. 19, Nov. 23 and Dec. 3 children ages 8 to 12 train like astronauts at Delta Gymnastics incorporating DIGIVATIONS STEM+MOVEMENT (science, technology, engineering and math principles) and gymnastics training provided by DGS coaches. DIGIVATIONS also offers LEGO WeDo and NXT Mindstorms Robotics workshops on Pro-D days at the Tsawwassen Arts Centre from 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. for $85 (includes materials). The Canadian Federation of University Women South Delta meets the fourth Tuesday of the month in the Royal Oaks Social Room, 1100-56th St. at 7:15 p.m. The next meeting will be Tuesday, Oct. 23. KinVillage Community Centre will be having a Rock & Roll Halloween Party. Inspired by the names on the cenotaph in Ladner's Memorial Park, the tale of those who fell and those who survived is revealed in the free library program, The Delta Boys (1914-1919) on Thursday, November 8, 1:30 - 3 p.m. at the Ladner Pioneer Library. From the 27 who perished to the almost 300 who enlisted or were conscripted, Delta's men and women were involved in all aspects of the war. Presenter Peter Broznitsky is an amateur Great War researcher and has developed and delivered several presentations about the Canadian army in 1914-1919.

BC Guide Dog Services needs volunteers in Ladner to provide boarding homes for future guide dogs. The dog (already house-trained) will live with you for five to six months, and will generally be out training with a professional 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Mon-Fri. Staff will pick up and drop off the dog. Dog food and vet expenses are covered. The dog must be accompanied by an adult on non-training days. Best suited to retirees, part-time workers, or at-home workers. The Delta School District is excited to introduce a new initiative this school year - a music program taught by specialist teachers for all grade six and seven students. We are looking for donations of brass and woodwind instruments. All instruments need to be in good condition. Professional appraisals and tax receipts will be issued. Other instruments will also be considered. To donate: bring in instruments to any elementary school in Delta.

Celebrate Recovery is a non-profit meeting held every Friday night at South Delta Baptist Church starting at 7 p.m. We are an "umbrella" group meaning we deal with any "hurt, habit or hang-up" and we come together to heal together. IODE Boundary Bay Chapter is looking for new, enthusiastic women to join our local charitable fundraising organization. We are a fun group of women who strive to make a difference in our community by focusing on support for children, youth, seniors and those in need. The Fraser Health Crisis Line is recruiting volunteers to provide assistance to people in the region who are experiencing emotional distress. No previous experience is needed as extensive training and ongoing support is provided. IODE Boundary Bay Chapter ladies are pleased to announce the date for our upcoming Bridge and Afternoon Tea fundraiser. Through our fundraising initiatives, our chapter supports various organizations in the South Delta Community. SPECIAL EVENTS

A Harvest Luncheon will be held by the Fraser Chapter #30 Order of the Eastern Star on Saturday, Oct. 27 from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the Masonic Lodge, 4873 Delta St., Ladner. It costs $10. Everyone welcome. There will be door prizes.

St David's Anglican Church, 1115 - 51A Street, Tsawwassen, will hold its third Annual Christmas Craft Fair on Saturday, Nov. 3, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Home-baking (including frozen fruit pies), books, items by parish knitters, works of local artisans, products from Grandmothers for Grandmothers/Gogo Grannies, as well as unique handcrafted gifts brought to Canada by Ten Thousand Villages, and the Int'l Community Empowerment Society, will fill the parish hall with shopping possibilities. St David's Caf will be open for morning coffee and lunch.

The Parish of All Saints Poinsettia Bazaar, 4755 Arthur Drive, Ladner, will feature a Candy Cart, handmade crafts, a silent auction, quilt raffle, attic treasurers, baking, homemade frozen pies, and refreshments. The date is Saturday, Nov. 10, from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

There will be a Christmas Village Bazaar at Ladner United Church on 48th Ave. on

Nov. 17 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. There will be home baking, crafts, collectibles, Bottle Mania, kids' corner, lunch and baskets, baskets, baskets!

ARTS

Local youth band, Therium, play at Tsawwassen Arts Centre Friday, Oct 19. Show starts at 7 p.m. Admission is $5 at the door. Proceeds will be donated to the McConkey family.

My Favourite Animal Photos - an Exhibition at the Pioneer Library in

Ladner is Ursula Easterbrook's latest exhibition. It features everything

from Arctic Polar Bears to Antarctic King Penguins and everything

in-between. Although many of the photographs are from her many travels,

she has many local ones, especially Bald Eagles, Great Blue Herons, and

different Owls: Snowy, Barred, Great Horned and Sawwhet. The exhibition

goes until Nov. 14.

South Delta Artists' Guild is opening a new art show and sale entitled "Autumn Crisp" which depicts the changing season and changing colors. The show is running until Oct. 28. The gallery is open from 11 a.m. until 4 p.m. Thursday through Sunday. Find us at the Kiwanis Longhouse Gallery at 56th St. and 18th Ave.

Local Delta Artists present Nature & Design at the Tsawwassen Arts Centre Gallery. This art show runs until Oct. 25. Call 604-943-9437 for gallery viewing times.

ElderCollege Delta is seeking a musical director and accompanist for their choral group, The ElderCollege Singers. The choir provides an opportunity for those who enjoy singing in a group setting to perform occasionally at community functions. Practices are held in the daytime, once a week, from September to May only. ElderCollege Delta is a community-based organization of volunteers. Adults who would like to learn to play a concert band instrument or refresh their skills can sign up for beginner and intermediate adult community concert bands that meet in the Delta Secondary band room (4615-51st St.) from 7 to 10 p.m. Wednesdays during the school year.
