The City of Delta and community at-large has once again come up big in support of the United Way.
Delta staff members Robert Sullivan and Shannon Scott, who co-chaired the 2019 United Way workplace campaign, made a short presentation at council’s last meeting of the year on Dec. 16.
This year’s campaign focused on the theme of Local Love in Action with an emphasis on after school programs and isolated seniors.
There were 10 events that 19 city staff hosted and organized including two kick-off events at the city works yard and city hall, book sales at a variety of sites, a chili cook-off, bake off and bake sale, a Samosa lunch, works yard barbecue, fire Chief’s breakfast, airplane toss, virtual silent auction and bingo. All of these events raised, $10,826.
Added to that was $27,446 in pledges from the community as well as $2,270 was raised through the sale of 544 recreation passports bringing the grand total of $40,542.
“We would like to thank the 2019 committee members and their supportive department heads who worked very hard to achieve the success that we celebrate here today,” said Scott. “This would also not have been possible without the support of our CUPE local 454, community donors and of course our colleagues who contributed to the campaign.
Mayor George Harvie called the campaign “outstanding”, while Coun. Lois Jackson said it was a tremendous amount of money raised.
“Everyone is to be congratulated and thank you once again. It is just a pleasure to have you all work so hard for the betterment of so many people,” said Jackson.
