Delta residents may see colourful food trucks and other commercial vehicles begin appearing parked on private residential driveways.

City council at its upcoming meeting on Monday, Dec. 2 will discuss a motion on allowing Delta business owners to park their commercial vehicles on their own home driveways.

The motion put forward by Coun. Dylan Kruger at the Nov. 18 ,meeting, notes small businesses are crucial to maintaining the vitality of the community, but the city’s current bylaw restricts the parking of commercial vehicles on residential properties, creating challenges for those business.

Entrepreneurs, such as ice cream vendors, should have the flexibility of parking their vehicles at home, he said, adding the city should reduce barriers and foster a business-friendly environment.

Kruger’s motion comes following a recent order by the city’s bylaw department for the owner of a Cookie's Ice Cream truck to not park their vehicle on their driveway.

The bylaws department acted on a complaint by a neighbour, compelling the ice cream truck owner to find elsewhere to park.

The owner noted many contractors park their vehicles at home at night.

Kruger’s motion also requests staff to review existing bylaws, provide a report on the current restrictions and proposed amendments, while ensuring “reasonable limits” on vehicle weight and size.

The storage or parking of recreational vehicles and boats is permitted on a residential property subject to the several conditions.
