More bus shelters may be needed in Delta’s industrial areas.

That’s according to a motion put forward by Coun. Jennifer Johal at council’s meeting earlier this month, stating that the city’s industrial zones, particularly Tilbury and Annacis, are integral to the economic vitality of Delta and that bus shelters provide comfort, safety and accessibility for public transit users.

To be discussed at the next meeting of council on June 24, the motion asks council to direct staff to conduct an assessment of the current transit infrastructure in those areas to identify gaps and opportunities to install new bus shelters. The motion also asks for council to direct staff to seek potential funding sources and partnership opportunities.

At last year’s Union of BC Municipalities (UBCM) convention, one of the motions put forward by the City of Delta called on the provincial government to develop a comprehensive public transit service plan for industrial lands and business parks to ensure better commuting options are available for workers to underserved areas.

A Delta staff report on that motion noted public transit solutions are not planned or focused on industrial areas or business parks, as those are lower-density areas and are, by design, located further away from residential neighbourhoods, resulting in longer commutes with fewer stops.
