Delta dogs must have their pooch licences renewed yearly

Just like you need a licence to drive, your pooch needs a licence to be a dog in the City of Delta.

Just like you need a licence to drive, your pooch needs a licence to be a dog in the City of Delta.

All Delta dogs need a licence once they reach six months old and they have to be renewed yearly, a task that is easier if done sooner rather than later, because of the discount the city offers.

Any dog that gets his or her licence on or before Feb. 28 next year, can save $10 off the usual fee of $35 for a spayed or neutered dog, or $55 for an unspayed or unneutered dog.

According to the city, ensuring Fido or Foofoo has a tag means much quicker reunification if your dog is lost and Delta staff pick up him or her.

The proceeds from the sales go towards helping the Delta Community Animal Shelter while a dog licence allows owners access to the shelter’s off-leash areas and dog classes. It also proves to anyone curious, that you’re the owner of the dog.

Renewing a licence can be done online using the city’s Delta Online service or in person at Delta city hall, as well as at the North Delta and South Delta recreation centres, the Delta Community Animal Shelter and several pet supply stores throughout the city. Renewals can also be done through the mail.

The city also has special licences for difficult dogs. Those must be bought in person at the Delta Community Animal Shelter. The fee is $210 for an aggressive or dangerous dog that’s been neutered or spayed and $510 for an unneutered aggressive or dangerous dog.

Residents who live on Tsawwassen First Nations land have to buy their licences from the TFN’s administrative office.
