The City of Delta has issued a request for proposals for the design of a new multi-use pathway along River Road between Ferry Road and Elliot Street in Ladner.

The project includes a new three-metre-wide pathway along the north side of River Road as well as street lighting improvements.

The design is to be completed by the end of February 2024, followed by the construction which is to be tendered and completed by the end of July next year.

Public consultation with the local residents, including an information meeting, will be held upon completion of a preliminary design.

The city also recently issued a request for proposals for a new 3.5-metre-wide asphalt multi-use pathway on the west side of 114th Street, between 83rd and 84th avenues, in North Delta.

According to the city, that contract is to be awarded this summer with work to commence as soon as possible for a December completion.

An integral part of the City of Delta’s new Cycling Master Plan, multi-use pathways are off-street paths that are physically separated from vehicles. They provide sufficient width to be used by people walking, cycling and other forms of active transportation such as in-line skating and jogging.

Multi-use pathways can have paved or unpaved surfaces, but paved or firm surfaces are often preferable for people cycling and people with mobility aids or strollers.

Members of the TFN Delta HUB cycling group made a presentation to council’s Committee of the Whole meeting this week to outline gaps and a wish list of priority improvements in the city’s cycling network, including 44th Avenue in Ladner.

As far as multi-use pathways, the group requests increased use of what they describe as simpler and cost-effective cement barriers in areas with little no pedestrian usage.
