Some quick action by Delta firefighters prevented what could have been a much worse scenario at a condo in Ladner on Thursday morning.
At approximately 9 a.m., Delta Fire received a 9-1-1 call of flames coming from a top floor balcony at the Pilothouse, a waterfront condo building that is part of Polygon’s Hampton Cove development located at 5535 Admiral Way.
The response was classified as a “working fire” which involves five trucks and a chief battalion. Once on the scene the (incident commander) confirmed the flames and there was no immediate access to the balcony with the occupants not home.
“They were able to get in the suite beside it to get a visual just to see what they were dealing with,” said Delta Fire deputy chief Tim Ipsen. “They ended up kicking down the front door and getting access through there. They were able to initially knock (the fire) down with an extinguisher and once they got onto the balcony they were able to hoist up a handline and finish extinguishment. They also checked for extensions on the floor below.
“Most of the balcony was lit up and decorative columns as well. Investigators are on the scene now and they say it maybe the possibility of smoking material that caused it but it’s not confirmed as they keep working on it.”
The sold out 94-unit building was completed in 2020.
