Pedestrian safety at a pair of streets in the City of Delta is to be improved.

The city recently issued a request for proposals for a contractor to undertake enhancements on Maple Crescent at 54A Street in Ladner as well as 119A Street at 90th Avenue in North Delta.

The work for each site will consist of the installation a new 1.5-metre-wide concrete sidewalk and LED street lighting. The sidewalk is to abut the existing rollover style curb.

New trees will be supplied and installed by the city.

The request for proposals notes that it is anticipated that the contract for the project will be approved by council in 2022 and construction should commence as soon as possible after the notice to proceed.

The projects are part a series of sidewalk projects in the city’s Neighbourhood Livability and Safety Improvements program.

The plan was developed in 2021 to improve accessibility and enhance pedestrian connections within communities.

The issue of Delta neighbourhoods having poor sidewalk networks had been raised by council, prompting a focus to improve the network.

The city noted in a report last year that a number of older neighbourhoods were developed without sidewalks, curbs and gutters.

Sidewalks have typically been delivered over the years through new developments and capital projects within the Neighbourhood Road Improvements program.

However, with increased requests for infilling of missing sidewalks, council approved additional funding in its annual capital plan.
