The Corporation of Delta is once again participating in Earth Hour this year and it's running a contest to encourage residents to do the same.

Earth Hour is an annual global event hosted by the World Wildlife Fund and supported provincially by B.C. Hydro. The goal of the event is to encourage individuals to turn off unnecessary lights and electronics in an effort to conserve power and in doing so, demonstrate support for the fight against climate change.

Scheduled to take place between 8: 30 and 9: 30 p.m. Saturday, during that time the Corporation will turn off all non-essential lights and equipment at municipal facilities.

During last year's event, Delta's overall electricity usage dropped by 2.1 per cent, surpassing the provincial average of 1.8 per cent.

"We only ask people to turn off non-essential light and electrical equipment for Earth Hour - no lights that affect public safety should be turned off," Delta stated in a news release.

For more information about Earth Hour visit: www.corp.delta. bc.ca/events or www. EarthHourCanada.org.

To encourage more local participation, Delta is running a contest. Just email the Corporation with your Earth Hour activity to be entered for a prize.

The grand prize is a family movie night-in package that includes earth friendly snacks, beverages and a movie gift card.
