Minister of Housing Ravi Kahlon, pictured with BC Lieutenant Governor Janet Austin after he was sworn in with the new cabinet on Dec. 7, said it will be important to bring many different stakeholders to the table on the issue of housing.

Housing minister and Delta North MLA Ravi Kahlon will be back on the campaign trail again this fall, trying to re-claim his seat in the Oct. 19 provincial election.

Kahlon was announced as the B.C. NDP’s candidate for the next election following a May 4 nomination, according to a statement on the party’s website.

“People in Delta North have urgent needs in housing, health care, education and affordable childcare,” said Kahlon. “Our growing community’s future hinges on our ability to build strong, safe, and inclusive neighbourhoods. The cost of (B.C.) Conservative or BC United leadership is too high a price for our progress.”

The party statement didn’t say if Kahlon was named by acclamation or if other candidates sought the nomination.

Kahlon has been elected twice before, in 2017 and 2020.

The statement said that since the NDP formed government in 2017, hospitals have been expanded or built in Surrey, Burnaby, Vancouver, and Richmond; new doctors and nurses have been hired and zoning has been updated to allow for more townhouses, duplexes and triplexes.

It also listed new infrastructure such as the new Pattulo Bridge that is underway and the extension of SkyTrain from Surrey to Langley, and the new Fraser River Tunnel that will replace the George Massey Tunnel, although construction hasn’t yet started on the latter project.

Kahlon was first elected in 2017 and was named Minister of Jobs, Economic Recovery, and Innovation in 2020. He’s currently housing minister.

The NDP says it will run candidates in all 93 B.C. ridings.
