Delta police were able to catch up with a car thief in Ladner Monday with a little help from one of its canine members.

Officers were called to Golf Club Drive Monday after a report of three males stealing a Jeep Cherokee.

A few minutes later, a K9 unit enroute to the area spotted the stolen vehicle travelling west on Ladner Trunk Road. The officer attempted to stop the SUV, but the driver fled, eventually making a southbound turn on 66th Street.

Shortly thereafter, officers discovered the vehicle had collided with a parked car in the 6500-block of Holly Park Drive. The police dog was immediately let loose and within minutes a suspect was located hiding in a shed.

The suspect was arrested and held for court.

Â¥ The K9 unit was also called out on New Year's Eve after officers responded to a report of a single vehicle collision with a power pole in the 7000-block of Ladner Trunk Road.

Upon arrival, witnesses told the officers that a male driver and a female passenger had fled the scene following the crash.

A police dog was deployed to try and track down the pair, but the suspects were not found.

The collision also caused a power outage in the immediate area.

The incident is still under investigation.
