It was another successful day for Ziva, detecting drugs hidden in a vehicle.

Those transporting drugs and thinking they have it well hidden in case Delta Police pull them over better think again.

According to Delta Police, on Jan. 24, people known to police to be involved in the drug trade were subject to a traffic stop in North Delta.

Evidence of trafficking was observed in the car. The suspects were arrested, however, officers were unable to locate any stash of drugs.

That is, until Traffic Safety Specialty Dog Unit K-9 Ziva and her K-9 handler attended the scene.

Ziva, trained in drug detection, went to work to determine if any illicit drugs were in the car.

As a result of Ziva’s searching efforts, a large “dialer bag” of cocaine and fentanyl was located hidden in a compartment.

Police note that the suspects have been released while officers conduct a further investigation, including lab testing of the drugs.

The Traffic Safety Specialty Dog Unit focuses on vehicles and goods travelling through Delta.

The unit is comprised of two constables/handlers and their highly-trained dogs. The dogs assist the two officers in detecting drugs and firearms.

Formed four years ago, it’s distinct from the RCMP-led Integrated Lower Mainland Police Dog Services team, as the Delta unit is solely based in the City of Delta.

In addition to Ziva, Remi is also part of the unit. Both dogs are labs.

The dogs are also be used for community education and outreach work.
