The Delta School District is starting its annual budget consultation process.

Encouraging all families, staff, partners and rights-holders to participate, school board chair Val Windsor said in the previous two years, the district has invited participation by way of a public input session via Zoom.

This year, however, to increase engagement, the district is trying a different approach.

Residents will be able to provide feedback through a short online survey, or through more traditional methods such as email, mail or through to a school’s parent advisory committee.

Those who take part can share what they believe should be the school district’s priorities before March 18, while they can provide feedback on the draft budget, once it has been released, from April 19 to 23.

The school district’s operating budget, approved by the board last year, did not contain significant cuts, instead decreased program areas that were to have limited impact on students. That budget was aimed at mitigating risk and ensuring long-term sustainability by reducing the reliance on reserve funds.

During the previous three years, the district saw a reduction in its reserves, due in part to the pandemic.

The annual operating budget for 2023/24 is $187.3 million, up by $6.2 million from 2022/23.
