Delta Secondary marks opening of new courtyard

Delta Secondary had a grand opening for its Centennial Courtyard Tuesday.

A ribbon cutting marked the opening of the revitalized courtyard, a project of the school's Academic Leadership 11 class that will give students a spacious area to enjoy the fresh air and sunshine during lunch hour.

"It's extremely satisfying to see all of the hard work of the students has paid off. It's really come together. We really couldn't have done it without every single student in the class contributing as they did," said teacher sponsor and coordinator Dana Huff.

The courtyard was power washed by district maintenance staff and then students weeded the area, bought furniture and assembled it, and planted flowers.

"It was an ugly mess before. It looks absolutely beautiful now. It's a friendly, cheerful, clean place to sit, relax, and enjoy some time with friends," said Huff.

The courtyard project also commemorates the 100th anniversary of a high school in Ladner.

The Delta Youth Support Line Society and the Delta Secondary parent advisory council supported the project.

"I'm really impressed with what they've done with the $1,000 we donated to them," said DYSL executive director Debbie Lindsey. "It's really a great gathering place for kids."

DYSL gave $1,000 to each of the district's high schools to celebrate Youth Week.
