Delta Secondary parents favour turf field at Ladner high school

Delta Secondary's parent advisory council has formally announced it is advocating the proposed second turf field in Ladner be located at the high school.

Delta Secondary's parent advisory council has formally announced it is advocating the proposed second turf field in Ladner be located at the high school.

In a press release, the parent council stated doing so would benefit more people than any of the proposed locations being considered by the Corporation of Delta.

"We also think it will unquestionably be more cost effective because of the existing facilities and maximized usage," the release stated. "We hope that such a partnership between the municipality of Delta and the Delta school district will herald a new era of cooperation between these two key players, which follows on the heels of a province-wide trend in community partnerships."

The parent council stated such a facility would be the pride of the community, building on the history of the existing track and fostering healthier lifestyles for all through a central location.

Delta's parks, recreation and culture commission has discussed the location of a second turf field in Ladner with local sports user groups and the frontrunner is Dugald Morrison Park adjacent to Delta Hospital. Holly and Cromie parks were also identified as possible locations.

The project, estimated to cost anywhere from $2.5 million to $4.5 million, would be financed primarily by the Corporation of Delta, which would look to user groups to chip in approximately 10 per cent.

No timetable has been set.

Delta has four artificial turf fields, including one in Tsawwassen and two in North Delta.
