The 1995 movie Jumanji starring the Robin Williams had a bang in Tsawwassen.
Williams played Alan, a man released from a board game in which he was trapped for 26 years. But, no sooner had he arrived, he is forced to play again, which includes having to avoid the crazed, murderous hunter Van Pelt.
Set in the fictional town of Brantford, New Hampshire, the movie was filmed at several U.S. locations but also here in the Lower Mainland.
In January 1995, a wild chase scene with the hunter was filmed at the old Super Valu at Tsawwassen’s Delta Fair shopping mall, a scene which saw mayhem and the store pretty much destroyed.
The former grocery store had been converted for the movie to be Sir Sav-a-Lot, a fictional discount general store where Van Pelt tried to finally get the better of Alan.
Released by Sony Pictures, Jumanji did well in theatres, grossing over $100 million.
A sequel starring Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson was released over 20 years later.
