Here’s a throwback from the 1975 pages of the Optimist.
It took a lot of lobbying but the George Massey Tunnel finally got a bicycle shuttle service in April of that year.
Vancouver Centre MLA Emery Barnes was a big proponent of having the service for cyclists, but the lone rider in its debut.
The service traveled five times daily between the Richmond side of the tunnel and the Town & Country Motor Inn. A provincial highways department spokesperson at the time told the Optimist the new service was “a helluva waste of money.”
