Let’s head back to July of 1975 when a contest with a grand prize of a trip to Hawaii was underway in conjunction with the upcoming Ladner Pioneer May Days.
“I wanna see those dames in those grass skirts,” said 76-year-old Howard Jacoby, pictured buying a ticket for the Hawaiian holiday for two organized by the Ladner Business Association.
Wishing Howard all the luck in the world, but no promises, were Darryl Boyd, part owner of the Shop-Easy supermarket in Ladner, and Arnie Koroscil, who ran Big-O Tire on 48th Avenue.
Howard laughed that there’s no one he’d rather see hula dancers with than his wife Olive.
The second annual Ladner Pioneer Days was held July 17 to 20 that year.
The parade as reported to be “skimpy” but the rest of the events went well.
The winner of the trip to Hawaii was Mr. and Mrs. Gary Collins of Ladner.
