Let’s head back to the summer of 1975 when the second annual Pioneer Days took place from July 17 to 25.
Sponsored by the Ladner Business Association, the event featured, among other attractions, the Ladner-Tsawwassen Kiwanis pancake breakfast, a swim meet at the Ladner Community Pool, horse show, the Kinsmen Beer Garden, dancing, a kid’s bicycle race and a picnic organized by volunteer fire fighters.
The streets were even decorated with colourful streamers.
Afterwards, Pioneer Days chairman Danny Grant said, “The parade was a bit dull, but the rest of the events went off pretty good.”
Delta a week later played host to a meeting of the executive of the Mainland Southwest Tourist Association at the Town & Country Inn. It was a coordinating body of the tourist industry, receiving matching grants from the provincial government.
At that July 1975 meeting, John Friesen, president of the Delta Chamber of Commerce, said Delta lacked tourist attractions.
“There is not one single major tourist attraction in our area and there should be. Private industry should get involved,” he said.
