Safety enhancements are coming for the existing off-leash area at North Delta Community Park.
Council last week received an update on which option the city will proceed with to create a fully enclosed off-leash dog area.
Having a budget of $200,000, the plan is for the city to tender the project with the intent of proceeding with construction in late spring with a summer completion date.
In 2021, the city received a petition outlining concerns with the existing off-leash dog area at the park, including the lack of fencing between the existing off-leash area and the parking lot.
The majority of participants in a survey preferred the option that features a fully enclosed off-leash dog area on the east side of the existing off-leash area. It also includes barrier fencing between the existing off-leash area and the adjacent parking lot.
The enclosure has two access points with gated entries, while a new path would be located outside the enclosure, along the perimeter of the north and east sides of the enclosure. The new path would connect to the main park path, so park users would not have to walk through the gated enclosure. The design concept also featured new seating, shade trees, waste bins and signage that denotes the extent of the off-leash dog area.
A staff report notes that the final concept plan, where feasible, includes resident feedback that has been incorporated. One change will see the multi-use path running along the off-leash area relocated from the northeast perimeter next to the adjacent residences to the southwest perimeter next to the North Delta Recreation Centre parking lot.
