The City of Delta has issued a request for proposals for marine structural engineering firms, or individuals, with recent relevant experience in the design of boat ramp systems to lead the preliminary and detailed design of a replacement boat launch ramp at Wellington Point.
Located on River Road West in Ladner, the boat launch’s wooden float system was replaced in 2022 and included the installation of new piles to restrain the float system.
While the top three-quarters of the concrete ramp is in relatively sound condition, the lower quarter is deteriorated and broken with the waterside edge of the ramp being noticeably undermined.
A complete replacement of the concrete ramp is required to ensure the continued function of the important community amenity, according to the request for proposals.
The detailed design must encompass the complete replacement of the existing concrete ramp with a ramp of similar scale, constructed from precast concrete panels and also including an asphalt apron tying in the top section the ramp to the adjacent gravel parking lot.
The city also notes that once the preliminary design has been finalized, Delta will include it into applications seeking approval from provincial and federal authorities.
The exact duration of time required to obtain the approvals is unknown, however, proponents should anticipate a delay of no less than eight months between the preliminary and detailed design phases, the city explains.
Subject to funding availability, and approvals from government, a tender call for construction is anticipated in spring of 2025, with the aim of completing the project between September 2025 and February 2026.
