In 2023, the crew at Fire Hall No. 3 in North Delta followed an old tradition by pushing in by hand one of the fire department’s two new fire engines purchased by the city.

The City of Delta has issued a request for bids for a fire truck manufacturer or distributor that the city can work work with on the design and supply of two new fire trucks.

According to the request for proposals, for the past number of apparatus purchases, Delta Fire has purchased Smeal trucks,  typically built on a Spartan chassis.

Delta Fire now requires two more trucks, the first is funded within the city's 2024 and 2025 financial plans, so Delta Fire would like to start work immediately on design and requirements for the two.

The intent is to identify a cost-effective and reliable fire apparatus supplier and work with that supplier on the first two purchases, and possibly on future purchases for the next three- to-five years, providing that price, service, and equipment remain satisfactory.

Generally, the expectation is that Delta Fire will replace one truck per year, sometimes a  pumper, other times an aerial or other, the city notes.

Delta Fire has more than 200 staff, 19 fire apparatus, seven fire hall and a training facility in East Ladner.

In addition to fire suppression, Delta Fire provides pre-hospital care, rescue activities,  hazardous materials response and other emergency services.

The city also notes that in 2023, Delta Fire responded to 8,200 incidents and 3,000 additional fire apparatus movements.
